Confrontations in Somalia

Confrontations in Somalia

According to several witnesses and an associated press reporter , 16 people have been killed and 30 wounded during confrontations between the police and the army on Monday in Mogadishu, capital of Somalia. The fighting has been caused by the death of a plainclothes soldier, shot by policemen who suspected him to be an Islamist insurgent. The police officer Ahmed Nur explained that some soldiers saw the scene and began to fight with the police in Benadir market.
Civilians have been killed and wounded, and some victims are women. We could see hundred of desperate people gathering outside the hospital, in order to find again someone of their family or close relation.

It isn’t the first time that such a tragedy has coming. This situation can be explained by the weakness of the Somalia’s army: the unpaid soldiers are sometimes tempted by al Qaeda’s promises. The last 20 years of civil war has caused much harm to this army which is not well disciplined and trained. Some specialists compare it to a militiamen group!
Some European and international programs have been created in order to help the Somalia’s army, for example by training troops, but they encounter difficulties with the lack of midlevel junior officers: they have to play a key-role in the army, by imposing discipline.

the future of English

Nicholas Ostler presents his thesis about the future of English as a lingua-franca. He is convinced that the days of  English as the world’s lingua-franca are numbered.  He advances that 2 factors are going to check the spread of English : modern nationalism and technology.
The argument of modern nationalism is really convincing : as Nicholas Ostler, I think that nowadays it’s impossible that a modern nation make a foreign language official. Mister Ostler give an example  : English has bee rejected in England’s ex colonies, excepted in some countries  but it was a way to check competition between native tongues.
He also thinks that English will not be replaced by another language. The reason he gives is that no successor will be needed, because of technology.  He says that technology will fill the need. And I disagree with this argument : Nicholas Ostler bets on the next technologies advances : he considers that computer translation and speech recognition’s progress will be sufficient to supplant English : according to him, technology will be a kind of new lingua-forma…
I’m not sure that English will still be the world’s lingua-franca in several years, but I  don’t think that technology is able to replace human relationship, discussions between people… I can’t imagine such a world. Computer translation and speech recognition are very interesting tools, for specific situations (professional for example)  but we can’t always use its instead of speaking with people.

CARMENNE'S HOLIDAYS

Why Malta…

Malta belongs to the maltese island. The archipelago consists of three islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta is the largest island. It is the cultural, commercial and administrative centre. Gozo is the second largest island and is more rural, characterised by fishing, tourism, crafts and agriculture while Comino is largely uninhabited. And  Malta has very pleasant climatic conditions…It’s 15° at the moment…
A really good reason to go there, isnt’it?!

- Buses
The public bus service on Malta and Gozo is a good way to get around as buses serve the major tourist areas, go practically everywhere and are cheap and efficient. The cost of a bus route ranges from €0.35 to €0.58 and the longest bus journey takes about fifty minutes; the average ride is between twenty and thirty minutes.

- Ferries
A regular ferry service links Malta to Gozo, taking about 20 minutes each way. A sea plane service links Grand Harbour in Valletta to Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. There are also regular boat services between each island and Comino.

- Water Taxis in Grand Harbour
A & S Water Taxis provides cruises in and around the Grand Harbour, as well as crossings between Valletta and the historic towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa using the traditional Maltese boat known as ‘dghajsa'.

Fortifications and towers
Malta is known as the Fortress Island for its great mass of defensive architecture.
You can also go to Camino to see the Camino’s tower witch is one of the oldest towers.

Malta’s east :
The Hypogeum consists of halls, chambers and passages hewn out of the living rock and covering some 500 square metres. The rock-cut chambers are of diverse shapes and sizes, finished to different standards of workmanship. The complex is grouped in three levels – the upper level (3600-3300 BC), the middle level (3300-3000 BC) and the lower level (3150 -2500 BC). The deepest room in the lower level is 10.6 metres under road surface.
To ensure its conservation, the site’s microclimate is strictly regulated. For this reason, the site is open to a maximum of 80 visitors each day. From Monday to Sunday seven tours will be conducted, starting on the hour from 9.00 till 16.00 (last tour).
